Millennial Legacy was born on a cold December day in 2016. I had been reading a multitude of personal finance blogs for a few years and finally decided to take the plunge.
I haven’t regretted that decision for a minute.
I had actually contemplated starting my own blog about a year prior and even wrote a few blog entries, some of which are currently on my site! The one regret I do have is not starting sooner. I would be so much further along if I had just gone with my gut and started earlier.
I really had no clue what I was doing when I got started. Actually that is a huge understatement! It was only about 6 months prior that I even learned what SEO meant. Yea, that’s how little I knew. And for those of you out there that still don’t know, no worries. It stands for Search Engine Optimization. But you don’t need to worry about that right now.
If you want to learn how to start your own blog you have come to the right place! This step-by-step guide will tell you exactly what I did.
Maybe you already have an awesome domain name picked out and ready to use. Awesome! Let’s do this.
The first thing you will want to do is go to bluehost.com.
This is the hosting service that I use and I have been extremely happy so far.
Once you have a separate screen opened using the bluehost link you are ready to roll!
If you don’t already have a killer domain name picked out I would suggest going to godaddy.com or a similar site and search to see if the domain name that you want is available.
DON’T BUY YOUR DOMAIN YET!
You are simply seeing if it is available. This is an important step as you will want to pick something that is easy for people to remember. If you don’t already have something picked out this is probably going to be the most time consuming part. Just type in your domain name idea, hit the Search Domain button and it will tell you if the domain is available.
Once you have a domain name picked out you will want to go to the bluehost page that you already opened to purchase it.
This is a very important step. If you buy the domain through GoDaddy you will end up spending more. Your domain name is FREE when you purchase it through my exclusive bluehost link.
Click the big green button that says “Get Started Now”
That was easy.
Choose the plan you want. You are just getting started. Go with the basic package. Trust me. This is sufficient for now. You can always upgrade later if you need to.
Type in the domain name that you want in the box below and click next.
Enter in all of your information.
This is the part where you need watch what you do very carefully. Confirm that you have the plan that you want and any add-ons that you want.
I knew that I was in this for the long haul so I chose the 3-year plan since it is the cheapest.
I also chose Domain Privacy Protection in order to keep my full name from being public. If you choose this option, rather than your name showing up as the owner of the domain it simply says “bluehost”. For me, that added bit of privacy was worth $.99 per month.
I didn’t choose to purchase any other add-ons.
Keep in mind that bluehost will charge you for the full 1,2, or 3-year plan up front.
Make sure that the total is correct and move on to the payment section.
Enter in your payment information. Click the check box saying that you agree to bluehost’s terms and then click submit.
You’re almost there!
This is the part where you start getting into setting up a lot of usernames and passwords. I would grab a pen and paper right about now.
Bluehost should have sent you an email and redirected you to a page to set up your username and password.
Once you have set up your username and password you should be able to login to your bluehost account.
Say no to everything!!! As you start picking out the theme for your blog and install wordpress there will most likely be several pop-ups that want to help you through this process for a fee. Just click no or skip. You can do it without their help.
Once you are logged in to your bluehost account you will want to get to your cpanel or control panel.
Once you are in the control panel look for Install WordPress. Click this button.
You will then be taken to the bluehost marketplace aka the MOJO marketplace. Hit the get started button.
Select the domain that you registered from the drop down menu. Before you hit next uncheck the two plugins below. You don’t need those. After you do that go ahead and hit next.
Here you will set up your username and password for WordPress. Remember that pen and paper I had you get out…
Make sure and choose a strong password so that your site does not get hacked. Click the install button.
Congratulations! You did it!
Now you will go through a series of steps to personalize your blog. Again, as I said before, don’t spend any more money at this point.
If anymore pop-ups come up just decline and move on.
The only thing I might suggest is using a paid theme. I started out with a free theme but it was clunky and hard to navigate through.
I ended up purchasing the Daily Dish Pro theme through Studio Press and I love it! It was much easier to personalize and modify.
There are thousands of resources online showing you how to navigate through WordPress. It takes a little time, but trust me if a former hog farmer from the Midwest can figure this out so can you.
Shoot me an email if you have any questions about how to get started.
